Viralimalai Subramanya Swamy Temple is one of the famous Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Muruga, located in the town of Viralimalai about 28 km from Trichy and 40 km from Pudukottai.
Historical Origins
Construction: The original structure is traditionally credited to the Pallava king Nandivarman II or a local chief named Azhagiya Manavalan.
Patronage: The temple was expanded and maintained over centuries by powerful dynasties, including the Cholas, Vijayanagara Emperors, Madurai Nayaks, and the rulers of Pudukkottai (Thondaiman dynasty). These rulers were responsible for adding many of the temple’s elaborate mandapams (halls) and fortifications.
Architecture: It is a prime example of Dravidian architecture, with the main idol of Lord Murugan (Arumugan – six faced with twelve hands) seated on his peacock mount, flanked by his consorts, Valli and Deivanai.
Spiritual and Literary Significance
Saint Arunagirinathar: The temple is celebrated in the devotional hymns of the 15th century poet – saint Arunagirinathar. Lord Murugan is said to have personally appeared and guided the saint here, teaching him the secrets of the Ashtama Siddhis (eight great miraculous arts). Arunagirinathar composed over a dozen Thirupugazh hymns at this site.
Abode of Sages: The hill is believed to be the place where numerous sages and saints performed penance in the form of Kura trees, giving the locality its name. Sages like Vashishtar and his wife Arundhati are also linked to prayers offered here.
The Cigar Offering: A unique and famous ritual is the offering of a cigar (Suruttu) as nivedhanam (sacred offering) to the deity. This practice commemorates a legend where Lord Murugan appeared as a local man to offer a cigar and comfort a shivering devotee named Karupamuthu Pillai during a flood.
Literary Work: The hill is the setting for the popular Tamil classical dance-drama, the Viralimalai Kuravanji.
Peacock Sanctuary: The temple complex is renowned for its natural sanctuary of peacocks, which are considered sacred as they are the mount (vahana) of Lord Murugan.
The Viralimalai Murugan Temple is thus a blend of ancient architecture, rich devotional history and unique spiritual traditions.
