Sri Swayambulinga Swamy Temple, located in the serene coastal village of Uvari in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli district, is one of the most revered pilgrimage destinations near Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli. Situated 52 km from Kanyakumari and 70 km from Tirunelveli, this ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped here as Swayambunathar, signifying a self-manifested form. The Goddess of the temple is Brahma Sakthi.
This divine shrine is known not only for its spiritual significance but also for its natural wonders. Near the seashore, four freshwater springs provide pure drinking water – an unusual blessing in a coastal region. The Kadamba tree, considered sacred here, plays a central role in the temple’s legends.
The Sacred Legend
According to tradition, a milk vendor used to travel along a path obstructed by the root of a Kadamba tree. One day, upon cutting the root, he was shocked to see blood flowing from it. A heavenly voice proclaimed that the place was divine and that a temple should be built there. The humble vendor first erected a small shrine of palm leaves, which was later transformed into the stone temple seen today.
A Temple Blessed by the Sun
This temple is unique as it is believed to be the place where the Sun God worshipped Lord Shiva. Remarkably, sun rays fall directly on the deity throughout the entire Tamil month of Margazhi (December–January) – a distinction no other temple shares for such an extended duration.
Belief in Healing
Sri Swayambulinga Swamy is revered as a healing deity. Devotees believe that bathing in the sea for 41 days, followed by prayers to the presiding deity, can cure various ailments, including chronic diseases and even leprosy. Many testify to improvements in physical and mental challenges. As an act of thanksgiving, devotees offer 11 or 41 baskets of sea sand, or place Nāga idols within the temple premises.

Among these, the grand celebrations of Vaikasi Visakam (May–June), Thai Poosam (Jan–Feb), and Panguni Uthiram (Mar–Apr) draw thousands of devotees with great devotion and splendour.

The Temple is well connected by road and local government (TNSTC) and private buses operate regularly through Uvari village on the Tiruchendur–Kanyakumari route. Buses from Tirunelveli, Tiruchendur, Valliyoor, and Kanyakumari stop at Uvari bus stop, from where the temple is a short walk or a quick auto-rickshaw ride away. Some long-distance buses also mention Uvari or the temple area as a stop, especially on festival days, making bus travel a convenient and affordable option for devotees.
Dress Code
Devotees are advised to wear modest and traditional attire while visiting Uvari Swayambulingaswamy Temple. Men are encouraged to wear dhoti, veshti, or simple trousers with a shirt, and women should wear saree, salwar kameez, or other decent traditional clothing.
