Erumbeeswarar Temple is a famous ancient Shiva temple located in Thiruverumbur, near Tiruchirappalli (Trichy), Tamil Nadu. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, who is worshipped here as Erumbeeswarar (also known as Erumbeeswarar Swamy). The temple stands majestically on a small hillock and is one of the significant Saivite shrines in the region, carrying both spiritual and historical importance.
Legend and Significance
The presiding deity, Lord Shiva, is called Erumbeeswarar because of a unique legend. It is believed that once, even ants (erumbu in Tamil) were able to climb up the hill and worship the Lord here without difficulty. Hence, the Lord came to be known as Erumbeeswarar, symbolizing compassion and accessibility to all living beings. The temple is also associated with sage Vasishtha and is considered a place of immense spiritual merit, where sincere prayers are said to be fulfilled.

The temple architecture reflects the style of the early Chola period, with a hill-temple structure that requires devotees to climb steps to reach the sanctum. The main shrine houses the lingam of Lord Shiva, worshipped as Erumbeeswarar, while Goddess Parvati is present as Narunguzhal Nayaki Amman.
