Uthamalingeswarar Temple – The Ancient Chola Shrine of Perumanallur
Located in Perumanallur, a serene town in the Tiruppur district of Tamil Nadu, the Uthamalingeswarar Temple is an ancient and sacred shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. The presiding deity is known as Sri Uthamalingeswarar (also called Chandrasekarar) and the Goddess is Govardanambigai. The temple is west-facing and holds immense spiritual importance for devotees in the Kongu region.

The temple’s origins date back to the Chola period, around or before the 10th century CE. The core sanctum (garbhagriha) stands as a fine example of early Chola architecture, showcasing the craftsmanship of that era. Later expansions were made by the Kongu Cholas and Pandyas, followed by additions during the Vijayanagara period. The temple’s front mandapa (hall) is adorned with beautifully sculpted pillars that carry lion (simha) type capitals – a typical feature of Vijayanagara design.
Above the sanctum, the two-tier Nagara-style Vimana rises gracefully, enhancing the temple’s grandeur. Sculptures of Oorthuva Thandava Murthy, Ardhanareeswarar and Veerabahu can be seen on the mandapa pillars, reflecting both artistic beauty and religious symbolism.
Legends and Spiritual Significance
In ancient times, Perumanallur was known as Perum Pazhanam or Perumpazhanallur, meaning “land of abundant greenery.” According to legend, when people neglected worship, Lord Shiva became angry and cursed the land, turning it barren. Goddess Parvati, in her compassion, performed deep penance here to appease him. Her devotion restored fertility to the land, and this very place became the site of the Uthamalingeswarar Temple.
