Nestled in the serene stretch of the Karur–Trichy highway, just 6 kilometers from Kulithalai, lies the sacred Karuppathur Simmapureeswarar Temple in Karur District. The presiding deity here is Lord Simmapureeswarar, accompanied by his consort Goddess Sugantha Kundalambigai. This hallowed shrine is believed to be the very place where Lord Narasimha worshipped Lord Shiva to rid himself of the sins incurred after slaying the demon Hiranyakashipu. Originally known as Narasimhapureeswarar, the deity later came to be revered as Simmapureeswarar.
A unique and fascinating feature of this temple is its Nandi, the sacred bull of Lord Shiva. Unlike others, this Nandi has one ear open and the other closed. Devotees believe that when they whisper their prayers and problems into Nandi’s open ear, he conveys their pleas directly to Lord Shiva. According to legend, Lord Shiva once instructed Lord Narasimha to whisper into Nandi’s ear to be freed from his sins and the stains of battle. Narasimha obeyed, and thus attained liberation. Ever since, devotees continue this divine practice, trusting that Nandi will carry their heartfelt wishes to the Lord himself.
In the sanctum of Goddess Sugantha Kundalambigai, there lies a sacred turmeric pot (Manjal Thotti) filled with countless pieces of turmeric offered by devotees. It is said that taking one piece, praying sincerely and applying it daily helps fulfill one’s wishes. When their prayers are answered, devotees return with offerings of turmeric, expressing gratitude and faith.
A temple where whispers reach the divine — and faith turns wishes into blessings.
