Sri Pundarikaksha Perumal Temple is located in Thiruvellarai, about 20 kms northeast of Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) in Tamil Nadu. The temple stands on a small white hill made of chalk, from which the place gets its name – “Vellarai” meaning white rock.
History
This ancient temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams, the sacred shrines dedicated to Lord Vishnu that are praised in the hymns of the Alvars (Tamil Vaishnava saints). The temple is believed to be older than the Srirangam Ranganathaswamy Temple. It is said to have been constructed during the Sangam period, and later renovated by the Pallava, Chola and Vijayanagara kings. The inscriptions found here belong to the reigns of Dantivarman, Parantaka Chola and Kulothunga Chola I.
Legend
According to legend, Lord Vishnu appeared here as Pundarikaksha (the Lotus-eyed Lord) to bless a devotee named Pundarika Maharishi, who performed penance to attain the Lord’s vision. The sage made a garland of white lotuses (symbolizing purity) to worship Vishnu, and hence the deity got the name Pundarikaksha. It is also said that Lord Garuda brought Vishnu’s idol from Vaikuntha and placed it here. The hill (Vellarai) is believed to have been formed when Varaha (the Boar Avatar of Vishnu) killed the demon Hiranyaksha and placed the earth here.
Architecture
The temple showcases beautiful Dravidian-style architecture with huge gateways and tall walls. The main sanctum houses Lord Pundarikaksha Perumal in a standing posture, with Goddess Lakshmi (Pankajavalli Thayar) in a separate shrine. The temple has two concentric rectangular enclosures, representing the spiritual journey from the material world to the divine. It also features a unique step well (Kalyani) and several mandapams with carvings from early dynasties.
Specialization / Significance
This temple is regarded as older than Srirangam, often called the “Adi Rangam” (Original Ranganatha Kshetram). The temple is considered highly sacred for Vishnu devotees, and visiting both Thiruvellarai and Srirangam is said to grant complete blessings of the Lord.
The Vaikunta Ekadasi and Brahmotsavam festivals are celebrated grandly. It is one of the few temples where both Pundarikaksha Perumal and Lakshmi Devi have ancient separate shrines. The temple is associated with salvation (moksha) and purity, as the name “Vellarai” symbolizes white, meaning freedom from sin.
