Sri Naga Sai Mandir – A Beacon of Sai’s Blessings in Coimbatore

Sri Naga Sai Mandir, located in Coimbatore is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to Shirdi Sai Baba, the beloved Indian spiritual master. The temple’s roots trace back to 1939, when Sri H.H.B.V. Narasimha Swamiji, Sri C. Varadaraja Ayyah, and Sri A.V.K. Chari initiated the Sai movement in the city.

Origin and Establishment

With a vision to spread Sai Baba’s teachings, a thatched hut was first established as Sri Sai Baba Madam for darshan. In 1942, Sri C. Varadaraja Ayyah generously donated an acre of land on Mettupalayam Road for building a more permanent spiritual center. The temple opened its doors to all regardless of caste, creed, class or religion making it a true sanctuary of unity and devotion. Regular Sai Bhajans were conducted every Thursday and Sunday, fostering a deep spiritual connection among devotees.

The Divine Appearance – Advent of Sri Naga Sai

On Thursday, January 7, 1943, during a bhajan session, a divine cobra (Naga) miraculously appeared before Baba’s picture. Adorned with the holy marks of Tripundra, Shankha, and Chakra, the cobra stood motionless in a state of deep worship. Thousands gathered in awe as the Naga remained unmoved for 17 hours, immersed in the sacred vibrations.

Covered in flowers offered by the devotees, the cobra eventually emerged to allow a photograph to be taken a divine moment believed to be a direct sign from Baba. After circling the picture of Sai Baba, the Naga gracefully disappeared into nearby bushes, where an ant-hill later emerged, marking the holy ground. Since that miraculous event, Shirdi Sai Baba has been venerated here as Sri Naga Sai.

This historic event is beautifully chronicled in the Shri Sai Satcharita (Tamil), Chapter 35.

The First Idol Installation by Sathya Sai Baba

The marble idol of Shirdi Sai Baba was formally installed on February 26, 1961, by Sri Sathya Sai Baba, believed by many to be a reincarnation of Shirdi Sai Baba. This marked the first-ever idol installation by Sathya Sai Baba and remains a spiritual landmark in Sai history.

✨ Sacred Relics and Offerings

  • Holy Stick: The temple preserves a sacred stick used by Shirdi Sai Baba himself. Devotees receive blessings through this revered relic, brought from Shirdi.
  • Sacred Dhuni: The ever-burning Dhuni flame, originating from Shirdi via Bangalore Mandir, radiates divine energy. The Udi (sacred ash) from this Dhuni is offered as prasadam, believed to possess healing powers and spiritual protection.

🛕 The Golden Chariot

On June 6, 2007, the Sri Naga Sai Trust unveiled the majestic Golden Chariot (Thanga Ther) bearing a Golden Idol of Sai Baba one of its kind in the world. This divine chariot is taken around the temple’s prakaram every Thursday at 8:00 PM, drawing crowds of devotees.
