Dharmalingeshwarar Temple: A Sacred Legacy of the Pandavas on Coimbatore’s Mystic Hill

Perched atop a serene hill in Marappalam, Madukkarai just 13 km south of Coimbatore the Sri Dharmalingeshwarar Temple is a revered shrine steeped in history and spiritual energy. According to legend, this is where Dharma (Yudhisthira), the eldest of the Pandavas, worshipped a Swayambulinga (self-manifested Shiva Lingam) during their exile. As Dharma performed his penance on the hill, Bhima is believed to have stood guard at its base.

Built in the classic Dravidian architectural style, the temple showcases intricate carvings and masterful sculptures that adorn the entrance and pillars, each narrating tales of divine glory. The sanctum exudes a calm, spiritual aura, where the silence is filled with divinity. The temple’s sacred Vilwa tree, believed to have grown from an ancient serpent’s anthill, adds to the mystical charm of the surroundings. From the hilltop, visitors are rewarded with panoramic views of Coimbatore and the misty Western Ghats especially breathtaking during early mornings.

A sanctuary for devotees of Lord Shiva, the temple invites worship through traditional rituals such as Abhishekam (ritual bathing of the Lingam), and offerings of flowers, fruits, and coconuts. The Chitra Pournami festival is the highlight of the year, attracting 35,000 to 40,000 devotees who participate in Girivalam, the sacred circumambulation of the hill. This spiritual trek spans approximately 4.5 km, and is well-maintained with water facilities, lighting, and resting benches along the path.

Girivalam is observed every Pournami (Full Moon Day) between 6:00 AM and 5:00 PM, offering a deeply fulfilling spiritual journey. The temple is open daily from 6:30 AM to 12:30 PM and 2:30 PM to 5:00 PM, with special Poojas and Aradhanas conducted on Pradosham and Amavasya (New Moon) days, drawing countless devotees seeking divine blessings and inner peace.
