Nestled in the Western Ghats near Coimbatore, the Velliangiri Hills, also known as the “South Kailash,” are a spiritually revered mountain range and a haven for trekking enthusiasts. These majestic hills are part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, bordered by Coimbatore to the east, Kerala to the west, and the Nilgiri and Siruvani hills to the north and south.
The spiritual significance of Velliangiri is profound. The summit of the seventh hill hosts a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped here as Swayambhu—a self-manifested form. For countless devotees, reaching this summit is akin to a pilgrimage to Mount Kailash itself. The seven hills are symbolically linked to the seven chakras of the human body, adding a deeper layer of mysticism to the journey.
Trekking to the summit is no ordinary hike—it is a test of endurance, faith, and devotion. With steep, rocky paths that wind through dense forests and rugged terrains, it is considered one of the most challenging treks in Coimbatore. The best season for this spiritual adventure is from February to May, with a significant influx of pilgrims during the Shivaratri festival.
Along the way, trekkers encounter sacred natural landmarks such as Pampatti and Kai Thatti springs, and the famed Aandi Spring, where many pause to bath and refresh both body and soul.
