Chennimalai Hill: A Sanctuary of Natural Beauty and Sacred Heritage

Chennimalai Hill, standing at approximately 600 meters above sea level, is celebrated for its rich natural flora and fauna, as well as rare medicinal herbs found in its lush green forests. Known as Siragiri and Chenniyangiri in Devanagari, and Chennimalai in Tamil, the hill is also referred to as Sigaragiri and Pushpagiri. The city at the base of the hill shares the name Chennimalai.

This sacred hill is home to the revered temple of Lord Murugan, also known as ‘Kuringi Andavar,’ who is praised and sung about in the Kundruthorādal. Chennimalai, abundant in natural beauty and splendor, stands as a testament to both its religious significance and breathtaking landscape.

Chennimalai: The Renowned Temple of Lord Muruga

Chennimalai, the most famous temple of Lord Muruga in the Coimbatore District, is world-renowned for its spiritual significance. It is here that Lord Arunagirinathar was blessed with “Padikasu,” or wealth of coins. The temple is also the site of an extraordinary event that occurred on February 12, 1984, when a bullock cart with two bulls miraculously climbed the 1,320 steps on their own.

Saravana Munivar, a revered sage, penned the Chennimalai Sthalapuranam, the temple’s historical account, 700 years ago. Devotees offer milk and curds as special offerings to Lord Muruga, with the unique belief that curds never sour in this sacred place. Chennimalai continues to be a site of divine miracles and deep devotion, drawing pilgrims from around the world.
