According to sacred Hindu tradition, Goddess Parvati playfully closed the eyes of Lord Shiva, causing the universe to be enveloped in darkness. Standing amidst the sacred fire of five flames, known as Panchagni Tapas, the Goddess meditated with unwavering devotion.
Pleased by her penance, Lord Shiva blessed her and directed her to continue her spiritual journey toward Kanchipuram, where their divine union eventually took place. The site where Goddess Parvati performed her meditation became a sacred place of worship and came to be known as Mangadu, meaning “mango forest.”
Over time, the intense spiritual energy generated by the Goddess’s penance was believed to remain at the site. Tradition holds that the great philosopher and spiritual leader Adi Shankaracharya installed the sacred Sri Chakra (Ardha Meru) to balance and channel this divine energy for the welfare of devotees. The Sri Chakra continues to be one of the temple’s most significant spiritual features.
